Language and Literacy in Young People is a thriving group of researchers and HDR students, based at Curtin University in Western Australia. We carry out research to inform our understanding of oral language disorders and mental health in children and young people, as well as the domains of reading and spelling (literacy).

The Language and Literacy in Young People (LaLYP) research group is focused on investigating language and literacy development in children and adolescents.

Our research examines a wide range of topics related to language and literacy, including:

  • Oral language and reading comprehension

  • Vocabulary, grammar and narrative development

  • Writing acquisition

  • The role of technology in literacy learning

Overall our research contributes to our understanding of how language and literacy skills develop in young people and how best to support their growth and learning.

Some of our recent research projects include:

  • Examining the impact of reading instruction on children's reading comprehension and motivation.

  • Investigating the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension in adolescents.

  • Exploring the use of digital technologies in literacy instruction and its impact on student engagement and learning outcomes.

  • Studying the development of writing skills in elementary school children and identifying effective instructional practices
